Ogham stone

In the foreground, an Ogham stone has been reused to support the ceiling slab. Like all other Ogham stones steles (dating back from the 5th to the 7th century), it presents strokes carved into the stone edge. Series of strokes constitute the Ogham alphabet. In most cases, the inscriptions commemorate someone and the Ogham stones were employed as territorial markers; Carhoovauler souterrain (County Cork, Ireland).
